HISTORIC VICTORY FOR UUAC INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
This last month saw the ever continuing success of the UUAC. With the first ever complete men’s team, not only competing in the Irish indoor championships, but finishing on top. This is the first time in the universities history that a full men’s team was able to compete. It is a real testament to the turnout and commitment of this year’s athletes that their dedication paid off and produced this success on their debut. It was a hard fought competition that came right down to the wire, with a disqualification decision looming that would make or break the teams’ chances, but in the end, the decision was a favourable one, paving the way to our first team victory for the men. The women’s team, found themselves with a tough challenge throughout the weekend, and although finishing a close second, still improved upon last years points which won them the trophy in 2004. The competition has really stepped up from last year, as shown in the results. But a still ever improving side will be back next year, ready for another shot at the trophy. The turnout of the teams was amazing, as shown by all the medallists;
Total overall - Finished 1st with 73pts
Total overall - Finished 2nd with 89.5 pts
RELAYS The women’s team finished a very creditable 5th with Elaine McCaffery, Sinead Peoples, Mary Margaret Meade and Lyndsey Monteith all running solidly. The B team also ran well with an excellent performance by Eva Mc Nelis on the first leg and Patricia Brady and Anne Marie Kane showing potential for two first years. These girls will now be aiming for the indoors in an attempt to retain the title they won last year. In the men’s race Raymond Adams was the first person home and would have set a course record only for a technicality. Diarmuid Grant then took over and in a very competitive leg handed over in 4th place. Kevin Seaward ran one of the fastest legs of the day to hand over in third and with Alan Bogle making the long trip from Coleraine and Francis Marsh on the last leg, both running mature legs the Bronze medals were secured. Liam Gray ran a very solid first leg on the B team as part of his preparations for the indoors. This was a great day for UU and a great start to the year. Well done to all involved.
