UUJ Win Irish Volleyball Intervarsities

The University of Ulster Men's Volleyball Team returned home from Dublin today after successfully defending the Irish Volleyball Intervarsities Title they won last year in Galway.

UUJ defeated the University of Limerick by 3 sets to 2 in the final in front of a packed audience. It was the first sets that UUJ had lost during the 3 day tournament being hosted by UCD.

On Day 1 UUJ defeated IT Carlow, IT Tallaght and the Royal College of Surgeons (RCSI) to finish top of their group and qualify for the group stages of the cup competition on Day 2 where they met local rivals Queen's University Belfast and hosts UCD.

UUJ dispatched both teams 2-0 in the best of 3 set matches to finish top of their pool again and set up a semi-final match between the winners of a cup play off match between 3rd placed UCD and RCSI who finished 2nd in the other cup group behind Limerick.

On Day 3 RCSI and QUB won the morning's cup play off matches to progress to the semi-finals to meet UUJ and Limerick. Limerick defeated QUB 2-0 as did UUJ with RCSI whom they had already defeated on Day 1.

The men's final between UUJ and Limerick went back and forth with UUJ winning the 1st set and Limerick winning the 2nd. UUJ went ahead in the match again winning the 3rd set but squandered a lead of 21-16 to lose the fourth set and set up a tense deciding 5th set to 15 points.

The UUJ players by this stage were extremely tired but UUJ graduate Nick Wright himself a member of last year's winning team managed to get them in the right frame of mind as UUJ stormed ahead 7-0 but then allowed Limerick to come back into it but UUJ captain Alan Workman in his last Intervarsities led the scoring to finish off the set 15-11 and the match 3-2

UUJ's setter Mark Fulton who last week was named as a University of Ulster Sports Scholar was awarded best setter in the tournament and Queen's David Hamilton, a Great Britain senior International was awarded best hitter.

In the women's competition UCD defeated Dublin City University (DCU) 3-0 to win their sixth straight title.

UUJ won the women's plate competition and after the tournament UUJ Coach Nick Wright commented

"Our women’s team is looking really good for the future with all our players in only their first year at the University. Our men's team is also looking very strong although we are losing Alan Workman after many years service to the team we will be hoping to bring in even more young players as UUJ are now reaping the benefits of years of development in the schools game in Northern Ireland".

"This win is our 2nd straight men's title and is a testament to the University’s dedication to high performance sport and to all the hard work the players have put in this year. Our focus is now back to the All-Ireland league for our team as we are sitting joint top with DCU and Aer Lingus Jets and playing Aer Lingus this Sunday in Dublin".

Men’s Irish Hockey Intervarsity

UU 1-1 UCD

The University of Ulster’s opening match was against UCD in Limerick today and the Dubliners were always going to be tough opposition.  However, from the off UU dominated the match but found it difficult to create any clear cut chances from their superior procession.  The only clear chance of the first half fell after Mark Moreland beat three UCD players in a mazy run to break into the circle on the right but the UCD goalkeeper slid out well to save the low well driven shot.

The second half was equally uneventful but UU were completely in the driving seat but found it hard to put together the final pass to break the UCD defence.  Simon Todd came close on an occasion and Fraser Mills was causing problems.  UCD had never looked like scoring and goalkeeper Alex McRoberts from Annadale was only called into action once, however with three minutes to go UU were caught high up the pitch and UCD managed to piece together a counter attack breaking into the circle hitting the post from a low shot only for the rebound to be tucked into the goal.  It looked like the game was all over, but the Ulster students simply seemed to step up a gear putting the Dublin side under immense pressure in the dying stages.  It was with literally the last hit of the game that Mills dispensed a vicious reverse stick shot through a crowded circle low into the backboard to save UU’s blushes.

UU 2 – 2 DU (Trinity)

In the second group game of the day UU faced last years Mauritius Cup Winners in what promised to be (on paper) their toughest game of the group.  It was a relief therefore when the Ulster students took the lead just five minutes into the game when right back Stuart McWilliams popped up on the back post when Simon Todd thundered a cross into the circle from the left wing.  UU were simply cruising and soon added to their tally when Chris Speers found himself unmarked in the circle and tidily tucked the ball past the diving goalkeeper to make it 2-0.  Trinity never looked in the contest at all in the first half and surely this would be UU’s first win of the current campaign.

The second half started as in the first and UU had a lot of procession in the Trinity half.  However Trinity slowly started to make an account for themselves in this game and pulled a goal back by virtually producing a carbon copy of UU’s first goal.  UU had many opportunities to put the game well beyond the Dubliners but failed to do so, the most noteable being a penalty stroke that captain Ricky Lee could only ping off the crossbar.  Centreback Peter Younger almost came close but could only force a short corner as did Simon Todd in a five minute spell.  UU could not force the issue any further from their string of short corners and they would rue missing these chances as trinity won a short corner that was tucked away by a man running in on the far post.  The final score finished at 2-2 with pool A in the Mauritius cup sitting as follows:

UD      5pts

UCD   5pts

UU      4pts

NIUG  0pts

UU need to beat NUIG (Galway) and hope that the other fixture between Trinity and UCD does not finish on a score draw.

Women’s Irish Intervarsity (Chilean Cup)

UU 2 – 1 QUB

UU girls started their intervarsity campaign with a game against old rivals QUB. The game started slowly for the UU side going a goal behind to a well worked Queen’s short corner routine well into the first half. There was very little between the two teams as the half time whistle blew, neither team created many clear chances. The second half was a different story though as the UU girls managed to turn the game around through a wonderfully worked goal finished by Lyndsay Neish the truly was a brilliant team goal with the UU girls stringing together an intricate series of one-two’s down the pitch.  The UU girls went into the lead deservedly when Louise Wright pounced upon a rebound from Sophie McGovern’s well worked short corner shot.  This is a vital win not only because of who the opposition were but it meant that points were are on the board ahead of several very tough games in a difficult group.

UU 0 – 1 CIT

Cork Tech were the next opponents in the afternoon for the UU girls, and it looked like the Ulster Students would double their points tally in the group.  However, early in the first half CIT took the lead from a short corner variation.  Captain Lynn Handley was simply immense in the centre of defence for UU and CIT were limited to that one chance.  Louise Wright had chances in the second half to level the scores but although she had found the back of the net the umpire had already blown for a previous infringement.  This would definitely be considered as points dropped for the UU students ahead of two very tough games on Wednesday’s group deciders against host Limerick and Trinity College.
